Children aged 6 months to 5 years i.e. those born between 1 November 2004 and 1 May 2009, are now being offered the vaccine. The HSE is now writing to parents to let them know when it is time to bring in their younger children. When you get this letter, it will have details of the date, time and venue of the nearest vaccination clinic. However, if that doesn’t suit, you can free-phone 1800 94 1100 for an appointment.

Getting the vaccine protects your child from swine flu. It also protects people around them, as they won’t be passing it on to family, friends, elderly relatives or someone close to them who is not in full health. So, the more people that get the vaccine, the less flu gets passed around.

Children aged 5 – 18 years are to be offered vaccination during December 2009 in their schools.

The first sign that infestation is present is usually an itchy head, although older children and adults may not experience any itching. The most reliable means of detection is wet combing i.e. combing wet hair with a nit comb.

Parents should check for headlice regularly and ensure that any infections are made known to the children’s school in order to prevent outbreaks occurring.

Where treatment is required, everyone in the family be screened where one member has picked up the infection.

It’s important to avoid frequent use of insecticides, which kill lice but don’t remove them.

Treatment should be repeated after 7 days to kill any eggs that may have hatched in the meantime.
